Soccer Hero 'Cheques' In For Charity Appeal
03 Feb 2009
Local hero and former England international Peter Beardsley was the star attraction at a fundraising dinner in aid of Greenfields School in Hebburn, South Tyneside.
The event, organised by Luke Woodward and Graeme Forster and sponsored by Corus Newcastle, raised over £1,600 for the school, which caters for pupils with special needs.
Over 130 supporters and guests packed the Albert Social Club in Jarrow to listen to Peter recount tales of his experiences with Newcastle United, Liverpool, Everton and England.
The current plight of ‘The Toon’ was also high on the list of questions from the audience, as were his long-standing friendship with Paul Gascoigne, his best goals, favourite matches and his relationship with Kevin Keegan.
Main sponsors Corus started the fundraising ball rolling with a donation of £750. Raffles and auctions throughout the evening took the total to over £1,600.
Rob Ridge, General Manager of Corus Newcastle, was delighted with the way the evening went. “Considering the pressure everyone is under because of the current economic climate it was great to see so many local businesses and members of the public turn out and support such a worthwhile cause,” he said.
“Greenfields is a great school that does so much to help its pupils, and so we were delighted to be able to support the event. My thanks go to everybody who made the night such a success."
