A new Corus Community Award scheme has been launched and the first organisation to receive a cheque on behalf of Corus is the Lisburn 2gether Special Olympics Club, who take part in the sport of Bocce at Lisburn Leisure Centre each Thursday.
Dame Mary Peters, former Olympic Pentathlon gold medal winner presented the Corus cheque for £250 to Jim Kirkwood, Honorary Chair of the Lisburn Special Olympics club and himself a former Olympic medal winner in hockey.
Receiving the cheque along with Jim Kirkwood are Lorraine Foster, Chair and members of the Special Olympic club.
‘This award has made a big difference to us and we have been able to put this to good use for equipment and costs for the club. We are very grateful to Corus for helping a local organisation in this way,’ said Lorraine.
“We play most Thursdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and new members are always welcome. Our coach Libby Bates is always on hand to help beginners and our members pick up the sport very quickly,” she added.
“We are hoping that our club will be able to take part in the forthcoming Area Games event which will take place in Jin Baker Stadium in Antrim in April.”
The new Corus Community Awards were set up to support projects that are working to make a difference to people who live in the local communities where a Corus business operates.
Lisburn 2gether Special Olympics Club is a local group dedicated to helping athletes in the wider Lisburn area, all of whom have a learning difficulty, to participate in organised competitive sport at area, regional, national and inter-national levels.
